Most people are more intelligent than the masses. The masses can be defined as a crowd with a conscience and intelligence of it's own. What creates a mass is usually the fact that alot of people are exposed to the same exciting element, for example a national broadcast of some importance or an eventthat affects the lives of people.

In a mass, the individual loses any sense of self and his intellect fades, to be replaced by his instincts.
There are 3 reasons why those instincts emerge:

- The mass gives the individual a feeling of power and invulnerability, thus allowing him to give in more easily to his instincts that would be normally suppressed.

- There's a contamination factor, meaning that an emotion felt by a minority in the mass can spread rapidly, either through radical actions or messages.

- The individual becomes open to suggestion. Like an hypnosed man is to the person who hypnoses him, a person in the crowd, having his conscious put behing his unconscious, will be open to the slightest emotion or act. This explains why people in a crowd will often do things beyond what they could ever imagine in every day life. The masses are alienated. This also explains why so many crowds can become criminal.

Now in this era of real time communications and information. One can wonder how it is possible not to be alienated. Nowadays, we're all part of the mass, even though we're alone in front of our TV.
