I read the book a few weeks ago, and according to the family of the author (Philip K Dick) they are very happy with the way that the movie was made faithful to the spirit of the book.
In the book, the main character is based a lot on the experiences Dick had with his drug use and the family was hesitant to have anyone adapt it for film.
