To me, Alien is just more proof that people really cannot be helped. Many, many people have extended their hand over the years (and even now) to help him out with money, with jobs, and with advice. He spat in their face.

He needs to crash. Hit total rock bottom and then maybe he'll "get it". He isn't there yet. He's still looking for excuses and pity, he has pity for himself. You can't improve yourself if you pity yourself.

This will either be his demise or his wake-up call, hopefully the latter.
