I was 18. It was a small 4-room cottage in the east of England which cost me the princely sum of 700 stirling (that would have been around $1500, if memory serves)

If that seems ridiculous, at the time my family owned several streets of workers' houses in the north, most of which had been occupied by the same families for many years. Thus they were rent controlled, with the rent set at around 55 cents a week. Eventually the local council got us off the hook by buying them to build a multi-storey car park in their place.
