Well that is sort of the problem - when people start throwing numbers around they seem to think 1 million = 100 million = 10 billion.
If he was a major stock holder - he could have at one point been worth 2 billion on papaer - and now be worth $100 million. $40 million dollars is a pretty big chunk of $100 million. Of course he would have to sell ~$70 million in stock to get the $40 million after taxes - depending on how long he held it - where he lives and such.
Most rich people don't get rich by luck (sometimes luck plays a part), but they don't usually blow that kind of money.
