There is no doubt that alot of people hate him but i think the same amount of people revere him. It is hard to judge really...I mean Fidel must be one of the greatest leaders of modern times and of the 20th century if you look at what he did. Instead of hiding in bunkers like every other leader in the world Fidel was actually on the front lines in his battles, he was willing to sacrifice himself to lead his people which alot of leaders just do behind a desk.
Like Pierre Salinger said, if Kennedy did not get assasinated US/Cuban relations would be totally different and i think we would see Castro in a different light for sure because Kennedy was about to lift the embargo and Cuba/US relations would have resumed, but unfortunately Kennedy was killed and the rest is history

Zarathustra,
I agree with all of your posts. I spent quite some time in Cuba, as well as studying Fidel and the Cuban Revolution (I also collect original Cuban Revolution photographs). It's been 2 years since I have been back but I will be heading that way again soon to stay for a month or two. I can't wait.
Fidel has my utmost respect as a leader and man of principles. The rest of the world could learn a thing or two from him. I am convinced if the US did not put the embargo into play, Cuba would be one of the greatest countries on earth today. Arguably, it very well may be already.
I wish him a speedy recovery.
