If you loan people money, you should be aware of the risks. Patterson should have his money back, but I think it would be better for all, including the webmaster community in general, if people try to work things out without the drama.

And when you put up your domains as collateral, you should know the risks. He made an agreement and broke it. Patterson could setup a payment program if he wanted to, but why should he. If someone broke an agreement, why would they not break the payment plan?
