Valid point and interesting link - and worth raising. Although Skype is "supposedly" private - it's no longer in the hands of the original founders, but eBay - a US-based corp. From that piont, all features of "privacy" disappear.
There is a high chance the perp was not traced by tapping, but by credit card transactions - another point of no privacy when the US NSA exists. They have real-time access to any US credit card transactions and, with other agencies, can act in minutes on card data. There are serveral cases where this was obvious - one incident was part of a larger case where an individual of interest drew a modest amount from an ATM and then made an error in going to a sandwich bar next to the bank where he was arrested in under five minutes.
