Erica, the reason I (this is my opinion, tho, and we all know what they say about opinions) think the phone sex pic wouldn't work for front page/on a tour, aside from the reasons others gave (crops off body parts, etc) is that you need to be interacting with the viewer through the camera.
The surfer of an amateur site is buying the illusion that he's got some kind of closer relationship to the girl than he could have to a regular porn model -- play into that and look at the camera as you would a lover. Make some warmth and friendliness shine out of your eyes, and try to make sure that most of the pics you put on the guest portion feature you looking straight at the camera lens.
I got that advice from another amateur girl, and since I started following it, my pics have come out better and better every time.
As for shooting pics especially for the site design, that's not a bad idea at all. Every time I shoot a set, I make sure that some of the pics are of me against a neutral background, head to toe, in good lighting and looking directly at the viewer. Make that a habit and you'll never run out of good material to give to a designer.
