Actually that has proven a very true cliche for me personally. Both with family, and friends. Money will strain the relationship something fierce. Especially if tough times for you/them/both.
If you have money, then they figure.. "that you can afford it" if they just take it upon themselves to pay you late, or never. Since "it's not going to break YOU so chill out".
I just get to the point I lend to very few people money period.
They are either indentured servants (people who borrow money with no intention of every paying, so they now mow my lawn, clear out my truck, clean my house, do my laundry, etc) because they like to do "fore-never loans'. Where you will see currency in return.. um.. NEVER.
or..
People who I KNOW will pay back because they hate to owe anyone. So they make sure that they pay you back even EARLY because they can't stand it.
But as a general rule, I do not lend, or loan money. I'd rather be the rich prick, then someone who's constantly fucked over on fore-never loans. I learned that lesson as a young adult. Nothing I hated more than, "Well you can AFFORD it" regardless of their promises and GUARENTEES that they would get it to you Tuesday.. .for a hamburger today..
