It's all about supporting their base, which is spiraling down to extreme right wing only. That, where the November election is concerned, is a good thing. The GOP never had the liberals--obviously--and has lost the moderate vote. In order to have a snowball's chance in hell of avoiding a disaster at the polls, they have to mobilize the group that still backs them, the social conservatives and religious right nutjobs.
This Foley business is a HUGE problem, because his controversy flies directly in the face of the party's pseudo-moralistic, fear-based agenda that's made the south a GOP stronghold since the introduction of the "Southern Strategy" 40+ years ago. The fact that this dipshit co-chaired the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children makes the PR nightmare even worse, and while the GOP base is unlikely to flip Demoocratic, they'll likely protest by not turning out in November.
