Over the past quarter century, an increasingly influential movement on the far right has waged a quiet war to undermine the Constitution. This movement has grown even more during the Bush years. In their view, the Constitution gives the president power to a uthorize torture. It forbids social security, the minimum wage and national workplace safety laws. It allows states to establish official religions. Ultra-conservative judges, professors, funders, think tanks, lawmakers and activists are pursuing an agenda that would radically transform American life.
"If they succeed," says University of Chicago law professor Cass Sunstein, "we will, without really seeing it happen, end up with a very different country--one that's both less free and less equal."
