Those are Japanese Hornets, they can be 4-5 inches long and are deadly. Note that the bees can kill the hornets but only one at a time..which is impossible when more than one is attacking.

When the bees kill a solo hornet, they surround it with their bodies and create a heat pocket that roasts the hornet. I love the discovery channel.
