Well in the bible there is multiple wives, wedding of family members and well that is just from the "good guys".

I think what you are hinting at goes back to that awkward time in the past when the church was and or just ran the Government. Marriage then was done to align given kingdoms into peace and harmony. It was carried down though to the lower ranks of society and was seen more as a property arrangement. Dowries and the like were demanded and it increased the overall wealth and power of families. More often than not these marriages were not done with the consent of either the bride nor groom.
