It's a function of religion and politics. You won't see porn on the newsstand in Muslim Indonesia, Catholic Philippines, Buddhist Thailand or communist Vietnam/China. But you will see "blue movies" for sale in all of these venues. The Internet is changing all of this in a BIG WAY... thanks to the anonymity of the net, there is explosive growth in soft core and hard core. When I go to the Internet cafe in Jakarta, 70% of the young people are accessing dating sites, mature chat sites or soft core/hard core sites. There's one thing that I learned in the corporate world that seems to be true of the porn market as well: Growth is stagnant in the US/Europe while growth is booming in Asia. Due to pride, predjudice and ignorance, the US/European automotive industry learned this the hard way: either figure a way to harness the competitive power of Asia or end up dead.
People who do "stupid shit" in any country are going to get caught and get into trouble. For any foreigner in Asia, access comes from building contacts through trust and long term relationships. Most foreigners come out here only because things are cheap - to fuck the local populations for a quick-buck profit. Those kinds do reckless things and end up causing trouble for everybody. I tried to warn one GFY poster who is going to Thailand for $20-40 all-nighter prostitutues that he is in for a steep learning curve, but that's what he's gonna do anyway because the lure of cheap content is too damn high. When guys like this get caught, the media always makes a ripe example of them.
