Idiot is a bit harsh.

But I agree... design is important. It's the definition of good vs. bad design that is in question. For some sites and markets, a sleek design is best. For others, an amateurish design is best. If you put an overly sleek design on an amateur site, it's likely not going to do as well.

The important thing in design is the sales pitch and presentation, as with any sales. It has to be clear, with a strong call to action.
