I would rather have a kid made to face music than just be allowed to get away with stuff over and over.

I remember when a guy did the same thing with his son who took the family car...just to teach him a lesson. He only wanted the kid to spend the night in jail, but once the state got hold of the case they went ahead and prosecuted...the kid did some time and became a worse thug after that.
Back to the Christmas present kid...this kid will now have an arrest record for the rest of his life...something that may or may not hold him back from being a productive citizen...this could very well hurt him on job applications etc.
I think parents need more original type punishments to get their point across without necessarily beating their children etc...I kind of like some that have been expressed here...like destroying the item...or having him open all of his up right then and not having anything to do on Christmas day...or better yet...make him donate all his gifts to Toys for Tots.
Much better things to do that will get his attention without ruining his future.
