Wrong... Well maybe it depends on what branch you join. I am a USAF vet and before I joined in '91 I thought it would get me in better shape being in the service.
Before I joined I was in top shape. Four to five hours of tennis and cycling a day. Plus weight lifting 2 hours every other day. I joined the service and learned fast the only break you got was a smoke break. How I fell for that I don't know but 12 weeks in to being enlisted I started smoking. Four monthes or so in to being in the service I started drinking regularly.
Over all I spent 5 years in the USAF. Yes I know the standard enlistment is 4 years but I extended a year as after my second year I got offered a 3 year tour in Germany which I took. At the end of those 5 years I left a biological distaster via smoking and drinking. Sure a bulk of it was my fault. However the reason I brought this up is the military won't make you thin or healthy.
Not only that, but they won't take you if you are way over weight to start with.
