some people will probably call me psycho, but i use ed frequently. ed knowledge is critical, especially when you need to edit something and /usr isn't mounted (which has vi and libraries), or you have no terminal emulation. ed, to the rescue! and it's powerful.
people do *nix or un*x because unix is a trademark. i think it's owned by SCO now or something. anyways, technically, Linux, FreeBSD, etc are unix clones. people probably also say *nix and shit because they're the same people who write sh!t ;)
