Politics is a fucking weird business, the measurement of good and bad is in degrees... there was a time when Saddam was the best of a rotten bunch, much in the same way that the Shah of Iran was at one time on the good side as well, not to mention people like Bin Ladin.
What "was" and what "is" can be two totally different things. Stuff happens, positions change, actions are taken, and "stuff" moves. Not getting pinned down to forever supporting a guy or country when it turns to shit is an important part of world politics.
In the end, Saddam killed many of his own people in cruel and unusual ways, mostly because they didn't agree with him or attempted to remove him from power. He wasn't judged and hung for being a threat to the US, but rather for what he did to his own people.
That is justice, no matter how anyone tries to spin it.
