You can argue all day about which version of this song is better. I'm a fan of both Cash And Reznor. I like the sound of Reznor's version and the bleakness of it. Cash's version is raw and emotional and I think both are great.
NO it was popular BEFORE he died.

It won an mtv Music award 20 days before he died. August 28th it won, and he died the day after the anviversy of 911 on Sept 12th 2003 I remember it quite clearly. His diabetes is what finally did him in.
