I had (and still have) a mainstream site that I was spinning my wheels on for a couple of years. Then one day I got it wrote up in the media (big publication, nationwide). Traffic poured in and the site became super popular. That was almost two years ago and my traffic has never went down since then, not because I sat on it and "enjoyed the success" but because I never stopped pushing the site, never stopped trying to exchange links, never stopped checking up and never stopped trying to get one more user to sign up and start using the site.
Bookmarked this thread for when I have more time to read instead of skim, but lots of good ideas here. Thanks for posting.

Great experience Minus. I had a similar one with a free site of ours. Many years ago a link trade of ours (Wifey's World) was featured on Dateline. We got 50,000 hits in one night from them. Instead of sitting back and doing nothing i worked my ass off that whole night working link trades. Result was thanks to that one night the traffic on our site went to 17,000 to a sustained 100,000 a day over a few weeks.
