I trained as a hypnotherapist about 9 years ago. I did it for about 3-4 years straight. As far as it's effectiveness for smoking, most of the studies show that it is only a little better than cold turkey. Basiclly, if you are ready to quit it will make quitting a lot easier. If you aren't ready to quit, it won't work.
The best hypnotist I knew had a decent success rate with smokers. However, she would screen out people who she felt were not ready to quit. For those that were ready, she incorporated a lot of the clients life experiences into her hypnotic suggestions, which made them more effective. Kinda hard to do with a tape.
What hypnosis was REALLY REALLY REALLY great at dealing with were phobias, anxiety attacks, and trauma (worked with several rape victims). I've seen and personally gotten rid of phobias people have had for 20 years in under 30 min. It is also pretty cool for pain control.
