It all depends on the directory, some directories sort blogs on incoming hits, if you don't send them a hit you will likely receive less traffic then when you send a hit. So 1 person that does send hits will find a certain blog directory cool, but the other person that doesn't send hits will only get a couple hits and will dislike the directory.
Other blog directories have toplist in the sidebar, the story is the same, if you are in the toplist you will receive much more traffic then if your blog isn't in the toplist.
The source of the traffic is also important, if you got a linklist where you can submit blogs then your blog will receive less quality freesite traffic. It may be more, but the quality of the traffic (how it converts) is likely less then the traffic from a blog directory that only has blog directory, blog and search engine traffic.
