It does sound like a mess, but to protect yourself you should have signed her to some kind of a contract that would forbid her from shooting elsewhere or limit the work she could do away from you. It may not be 100% fair to her, but if you are starting a site around her you need to be in control of her content.
the model aside, if he knew you were developing a site around her the honorable thing to do would have been to contact you and either forewarn you they were also going to develop a site or work with you, but then again there is often little honor in business.
