Not sure why the US took so long to release the tapes tho.

The first claims of a reason to avoid disclosing the tape content was it was classifed "secret" by the US govt. There is nothing "secret" about the tape - it was just embarassing - another screwup.
It then took along three years to have the tape released and came to a head last week when a coroner adjourned a hearing until it was presented - meantime pressure at a higher level eventually resulted in the content being available.
Who knows where this will lead - the coroner's findings are next, then *possible* further action against the pilot (tho he's been cleared by a US hearing) and the those in the Command Center. Both fucked up big time - the pilot acknowledged but ignored the orange panels on vehicles (NATO friendly vehicle sign) and the Command Center confirmed to the pilot that there were no friendly vehicles in the area.
