Sure DH - used to be in that industry - there is competition within the industry since everyone and their dogs are either producers, writers, whatever - tho they may never have made a movie.
The people who usually survive are those who "suffer" and get thru hard times
Unless there is an attractive "package" that others are willing to fund and some security of distribution in place - it's a struggle to raise finance and that can go on for many years before any prospect of production.
Got a girl hanging around now with $5mill in the pot to spend on scripts and she has bought rights to a couple already, but keep telling her that is only a very first stage and the main challenge is ahead in every one of her scripts - crazy kid, but good luck to her
