Honestly - yes I do think that man would be not only able to survive together they would be a lot better off in their understanding of the human race and what it takes to function in a society NOT based on religion - the only reason religion evolved was to explain unknowns or at least calm personal fears of them
The main difference with having one group rule over another outside of religious influence is that humans would be functioning on their own terms instead of made up terms that religions have created
So the short answer is - YES we would have survived - and would have been much better off
