I have a whole wall of windows and 2 sliding glass doors that get direct sun starting around 4 PM in the summer. I had to go the tint option (the reflective stuff mentioned above) and put some room darkening blinds on the bottom row of windows, and left the top row of windows just with the darkest tint available. I got it done from a local Tint King that specialized in the stuff for houses.
It definitely works. Cost about $1500 Canadian for a cash deal for the tint, but I have a shit load of glass. Basically the entire length of my house on one side had to be done.
One drawback is that you aren't supposed to use Windex or any glass cleaner with ammonia in it.
