It's your party and you can do what you like.

I think invite only works really well for smaller, intimate gatherings (say 100 or less). When you start getting into larger events (with space, say, for 25% of all attendees) you start to have problems of exclusion.

The funniest ones are companies that have "invite only" parties, but print up about 20 times more invites than there is space inside the event. The only people who actually get in are the ones with true "VIP" access cards.

Second funniest? The ones that put "VIP" on every pass... and then only let in the people with "GOLD" cards or whatever.

If you want to have a public event but limit access, those are the best ways to do it.
