The blog designs are all very similar-looking. I see some variation in the last few but nothing too dissimilar. I'm not saying they're cookie-cutter. They just look very similar and nothing I see truly grabs me.

No. Just a well-optimized, clever design, that utilizes modern plugins.
I don't like giving my reasons in here for not choosing a designer, since it may well deter others from using their services. I'll have another look at your portfolio and be in touch if I'm convinced you're right for the job.
