In Australia it's also illegal to leave a child unattended in a in any form of automobile, and it's also illegal to leave your keys in the ignition if no adult is in the vehicle.

I remember there being some controversy years ago when Crown Casino opened in Melbourne - addicted gamblers were leaving their children inside locked cars in the car park while they went to play the pokies.
I used to leave my daughter in the car when I went to pay for petrol but I thought about it one day, and realised that if anything ever happened to me that it may not be obvious that there's a kid stuck in my car. I have black paintwork, interior and tinting so it can be hard to see occupants without looking closely. Now, either she comes in with me, or I wait until I'm alone to fill up.
