It happened on mine about last summer. The warranty had just expired and I was pretty pissed off about it.
I called up xbox support, went thru some steps with the tech guy, he determined it was a hardware failure, and shipped a box to me overnight to send in my 360 for repair. They had it back to me in 8 days and it didnt cost me a dime for anything. Considering that I got the 360 for free anyway, I really didnt have anything to complain about. I havent had any problems with it since then, but I dont really play it very much.
I also have a Nintendo Wii (thanks Splitinfinity!) but I dont play it much either. The games are fun (in a simplistic way) but the picture doesnt look all that great on my HDTV like my 360 does.
