I would say, read as much as you can, take notes in word, make an outline of things that you think will work.
get ready for a lot of trial and error, some things work, some don't.
always remember that a surfer is an idiot and you need to dumb things down for them.
re-invest as much as you can into your business: traffic, designs, servers, etc.
