Nope, 12+ years to be honest and it's actually depressing. Personally, I'd rather have been an aerobics instructor.
As for your examples - it's a BIG difference writing the code behind the site and the front-end. However, you are correct in your sarcasm, I should have clarified. A programmer can create a magnificent back-end (no adult-related pun intended) but it's the UI where things come up ugly.
So all these TGPs have pretty little toys, as you pointed out, and I agree that most are ridiculously unimaginative. But that was my point: The guys behind all these cookie-cutter TGPs are programmers so asking for innovation (esp. design-wise) is a stretch.
For TGPs to break out, someone with a prominent one will have to start the trend then all the minions will copy+paste .. that's how 95% of the Internet was built

And you can come back in a year and make the exact same post and it will be just as true then...
