Sure piratebay should be shut down, I completely agree. But having large corporations circumvent the legitimate channels and resort to using hackers is a really dangerous precedent.
So maybe the media corps' actions are justifiable this time - but this shouldn't be something they are doing. Maybe next time they will decide they don't like someone blogging bad comments about them, maybe they'll want to cover up a leak or something... dangerous precedents.
Fighting fire with fire in an illegal way is totally irresponsible for a corporation which has obligations to its shareholders first - if these corporations get convicted of these crimes there's no telling how much they could be hurt. And no, it's also not justifiable to increase the price of one's share through illegal means.
This could be a slippery slope that should just be avoided.

All valid comments.
But what's the response to the question of protecting your current share that is being degraded by illegal means? Now don't anyone go off and say that what TPB is doing is legal (or anyone else). The content being delivered is not licensed nor are the persons receiving or delivering it authorized to do so (don't go off saying it's legitimate people getting backups either, as we all know this is a miniscule percentage of people). If the legal means are wrong, and you and your colleagues are losing billions upon billions of dollars, and you have no other means by which to correct the action, what do you do? Honestly what do you do? This isn't a case of trying to increase their market share, this is protecting where they are in the first place.
I have said it in other posts.... recognizing that thieves live in your neighborhood and allowing their actions to continue is wrong. If the police can't do anything, and the lawmakers aren't doing anything, don't you as members of that community have a right to protect your possessions and identities from those that wish to do you harm? And are saying FUCK YOU in the process?
How do you fight fire with fire the legal way? Wait for the lawmakers to do their job? Hope that the politics of the situation correct themselves to the morally and ethically correct way to do things?
Killing off a competitor by illegal means is one thing... killing off a parasite is another. If the coyotes come to attack my herd and the legal way is to contact animal control and let them get to it, I may lose half or all of my herd waiting (I, and others, can't afford to wait for that to happen). If I can just shoot the coyote without anyone being the wiser, I have protected my herd and achieved the same results (except that animal control might not kill the coyote.. they would rehabilitate, or impose a fine, or whatnot).
