Tony's right on the money.
Having managed both, I've found that cat's are, generally, smarter than dogs... but it takes _a lot_ more effort - and constant attention, to train a cat... mostly because cat's don't have that inherent "need to please" that dogs have.
If you're thinking you're not going to be around a lot, do yourself (and your pets) a favor, and get two cats - that way they keep themselves occupied.
Otherwise, stick to something you'd keep in an aquarium or terrarium.
