Possibly because anyone, especially in a moral argument loose credibility (in my opinion) if they use invectives. If your opinion is just, there is no need for the name calling bullshit. Or you might come across as someone looking for a suitable punchbag to release some steam on. At least I do not think that one moral wrong justifies another.
And in this case I think you deserved what ever was thrown back at you whether your target deserved his bit or not. Maybe you were looking for some verbal abuse? Classic release of various guilt feelings
