Tipping is part of the cost of going out to eat, it's assumed that most people realize this and accept it... it's why servers are paid far below minimum wage, around $2/hour in some places. When you stiff a server that's given you decent/good service, you're not only being a gigantic douche, you've also wasted his time (he could have been serving a table that would have actually paid him). If someone has given you shitty service, by all means, complain, get your food comped, leave a lousy tip... but stiffing someone who actually worked for you is just fucked up.
Servers are paid to serve you, yes, but most of their paycheck is supposed to come from the customer, not the restaurant. It's shitty, but it's how it is. By not tipping, they're essentially not getting paid for the work they just did.
Bonus fact: when you dine and dash, the server has to pay for your meal out of his tips. Most of the time the restaurant will not cover his ass. It always drove me crazy to see some suburban rich fuck decide he was entitled to a free meal, while the broke college kid who had the shit luck of having to serve him ended up paying for it.
For those of you whining that the servers should've picked another job, they took the job with the expectation/promise of tips. Most people realize that tipping is part of the experience, so this is a realistic expectation. It's just the ignorant assholes who apparently need to learn how to budget properly if they can't afford a 20% tip who fuck shit up.
If you understand all this and still screw over good servers, you've just been promoted to Captain Douchebag.
Bottom line: If you don't want to tip, go to a fucking buffet.
