Well, obviously this is pure speculation on my part, but I have always felt that they were of the opinion "no body, no case" which probably has a lot to do with Van der Sloop senior. I think he helped them get rid of the body. And I don't think there is enough circumstancial evidence for a conviction without it.
But just like the rest of us, I am speculating as I said.
