Aftershock, where do you live?
I am in Florida.
After the bad hurricane seasons of a few years ago I decided to install a generator. A BIG one. I priced it from local stores like Home Depot. Then local dealers. All bids came in about 60-70k.
I looked further and final cost was about 14k after some careful searching.
It is a 44 kw model that can easily power 4-5 homes. I wanted the extra juice to handle my pool and hot tub and to make sure all the a/c units could power up simultaneously.
Hit me up if this is the sort of thing you're looking at. The only downside is you have to get it off the truck (hire some local day labor) and hire your own electrician. All in all, a good deal for the savings, though. And it works like a charm.
It self-checks every week and has a remote feature that emails or hits your cell-phone to let you know if it was activated, and fires up within 10 seconds or so of an outage.
