I live in California and Justice Brown actually represents a small but increasingly vocal community within the minority community that is conservative. She is very tough, fair, and sticks to the written law.
In political terms [and If I were a conservative Republican], I believe this would be a brilliant "end run" around liberal opposition.
Caveat -- just because a Republican confirms a seemingly Republican nominee to the Supreme Court, it does not mean the nominee would "stay Republican."
Examples of "conservatives" who became liberal are:
Harry Blackmun -- appointed by Nixon
David Souter -- appointed by Bush Sr.
William Brennan -- appointed by Eisenhower
and the Grand Daddy of them all--
Earl Warren -- this guy was INITIALLY very conservative, after all, he did approve and strongly urged the internment of Japanese during WW2. Appointed by Eisenhower, Warren's court saw the massive LEFT WARD march of the Supreme Court.
