The problem is that even in the US and western europe the majority of all internet traffic, according to several big upstream providers, is from the illegal transfer of copyrighted material.
What really makes me worry is the new "quality" of illegal distribution over the last years. P2P has gone commercial with all the torrent sites, then distributors like rapidshare showed up, tubes opened shop.
It's pretty similar to other illegal activities on the internet, carding, trojans, phishing, etc. It started with a few freaks and then organized criminal structures took over to monetize it.
You are right, it will get much worse if the industry doesn't find a way to cut their funding. As long as there are companies left paying the thieves for freely distributing members area content, it's a battle we can't win.
