No, that's really him. 
When closet cases start to explore their sexuality strange behavior can result for a while from what I've seen. I think we're seeing it first hand in my opinion.
I mean, I'm glad he's exploring and coming to terms with himself, but I think it might be causing him to lash out a weeee bit perhaps as well.
