Depends what you want. I've owned an MR2 turbo, a Stealth twin turbo and a Supra twin turbo, all modified to some degree. The Supra to 400+ horse.
In all honesty, test drive some cars you like, in terms of what they look like. Then decide which one you like best for interior, handling, etc etc. What you like as a car, not as a "platform". Any problems in terms of performance can be solved with money.
Supras aren't as great as many people think they are. I suggest you talk to Supra owners if you're looking at getting a Supra. They are overpriced due to people who think they're a lot better than they really are. I sold my Supra, and don't miss it that much.
In terms of cars with modification potential, I'd say the top 3 are the Supra, the Eclipse GSX and the RX7. Each have pluses and minuses.
My favorite car was my Stealth twin turbo.
As for the "Fast and the Furious" lifestyle, it doesn't really exist. The import scene is mostly powered by 200 hp commuter cars with loud exhausts owned by guys who use their cars as their idenitities, but most live at home, have no girls, no lives.
It's definately not like the movie... I've been in the import scene for a few years and its never been cool. Raced at the local night street race spots, etc... gets old after about 2 months.
Besides, rice is played out now anyways. The import scene is dying off, and fast. Wouldn't waste the money, but hey it's yours to waste.
FYI DJ Furious the Skyline engine is actually just a standard 3 litre open deck 6 cyl that only handles around 600 crank HP stock. Same as the 300ZX or 3000GT motors. nothing special. Only the Supra block has known to go over 700 stock.
