a family friend was at his house alone, and his father has a nice sexy 12 guage. a guy broke in and first thing the son did was get the shot gun, the guy ran away and when cops came, gave a fine to the gun owner because the son had access to the gun.. canada doesnt fuck around

What exactly was he charged with? There's no reason anyone in the house shouldn't be able to access the guns if they want.
You sure he didn't have it stored improperly? If you don't have (at minimum) a trigger lock on the gun and the ammo stored separately in a locked container, then they like to hand out fines for that.
I keep all mine in a gun safe. But if I want to give other people in the house my combination they shouldn't be able to stop me.
