On out of the box systems, emphesis is put into big bass and such, and not fine tuning of the whole deal.
Adding a high end center channel speaker can make a huge difference, since this is the channel most dialogue is coming from.

THAT.......is actually not a bad idea. I'm going to be looking into that when I buy my new tv. I'm thinking of jumping to the newer wide-screen format.
Stocktrader --- I HAVE a dvd player, the sound is the same.
Unseen --- re- subtitles........ I sometimes watch those late-night euro-movies on the "Showcase" channel, and from what I can tell of it, MOST of them are subtitled with rather smallish white-letters that have no background shading. In any scene where part of the bottom of the screen is light, the letters in front of it disappear. It's like having rolling sound blackouts in a regular movie.Grrr, and that includes French, German, Spanish, Czech, all of them. I don't know what brain-dead idiots are doing subtitle work for these flicks, but they could use the assistance of a good webmaster that knows basic photoshop to demonstrate how it should look.
LadyM -- Well, a little I guess. If there was a "movie producer's board" where I could shove this rant in their faces, that would be good too. <img SRC="http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif">
