Provided they're defending _me_, and not my stupid actions (I don't want anyone promoting stupidity in my name)... and provided they also pull me aside and say "you know, you did something stupid"... that's a quality in a true friend, sure.
I think that too many people don't make that distinction, though, and think that being a friend means defending your friend's actions, even when you think they might be wrong. That's not a friend, imho... that's codependency.
