It's not about really defending their actions it's about not trashing them to others and defending them as a person. If my friend Drinks and Drives and gets caught yes that is stupid and I am not going to defend that, but I am not going to sit in a room as some asshole talks about how stupid my friend is for what they did and put them down. I will defend them as a person. A person who is not your friend will bring up your mistake to everyone and talk about it and talk about how stupid you are for what you did. A friend would say I don't think it's anyone's business or how many times have your drank and drive but since you didn't get caught you are better? See what I mean? It's about being supportive, respectful, and helpful.
Also John Gacy's hurt children, he wasn't thinking about being a friend to anyone else. I think being a friend to someone you have to be good to yourself and love yourself. You can't respect others if you don't respect yourself.
