Well... they don't really sound the _same_, but... yeah... similar. You should be able to distinguish between the two when someone says it. "Miss" (Miss) and "Mizz" (Ms.).
Unless I know for a fact that the lady's married or not, I was taught to address a woman that appears over 18 as "Ms."
The "Miss" thing has nothing to do with age. It's all about marital status.
"M'am" follows "yes" or "no" when respectfully addressing any woman of any age.
